Nice mix of sultry and lethal babes who may or may not be allies. Kidnapped May and Moneypenny. Plenty of murderous goons stalking Bond for the huge reward for his head on a silver platter. Pretty decent plot but some weak points along the bloodied path. Not the best Gardner Bond but fun. A deadly giant bat was a bit much and the finale on Shark Island with a dangerous Bond enemy and lots of bodies and narrow escapes. And a room with Vintage Bond blended pretty well into the 80s by Gardner.

And a room with a guillotine made just for James. How will he escape?

Will he come to the rescue? How can Bond escape a roomful of armed killers? Well, it is Bond. Good premise, lousy execution, maybe they'll make a vastly better Bond film out of it one day Mar 19, John Huyler rated it it was ok. Not up to Ian Fleming's standards. I finished it only because I don't like to stop reading a book I've started.

Gardner's 007 "Cold Fall" = 9/11 Part 1/3

Jul 25, Mark C. I enjoyed this one; a lot of excitement! And I'm glad it didn't have the rapid ending like Gardner's first two Bond books had. I recommend this book. Jun 03, Gary rated it it was ok. The last Gardner Bond book that I read was "Seafire" and being one of the worst books that I have ever read, I was in no hurry to repeat the experience. What an unfortunate mistake that was. Apart from it being even less Bond than usual, the writing is often so clunky that one is left wondering how it ever got published. However it requires a far superior writer than the late Mr. Gardner to do it justice. Mercifully, the book is a fast read and Ian Fleming Publications is far more selective about the authors whom they invite to write continuation novels in the modern era. Nov 27, Jeff Mayo rated it liked it. The fifth Bond book by Gardner was his best to date at that point.

It brings to question after thirty years and dozens of novels, short stories, and movies, why nobody killed Bond. Just hire the best assassin and have him shot through the head. But the evil geniuses always go big, wanting to kill Bond in a way that the world will remember. Here the plan is to take his head, literally, by guilloti The fifth Bond book by Gardner was his best to date at that point. Here the plan is to take his head, literally, by guillotine.

While it has the typical plot holes of Bond if you apply real world logic, it is a quick read, has a sense of humor, however dark it may be, and is almost entirely action.

Gardner started to really get a footing in the series here. Not the greatest series, nor even a great series, it is entertaining even when it is ridiculous. Action is too detailed for my liking. Unfortunately I did not enjoy this book, and the way James Bond dealt with Nannie was too ruthless for me.

Luckily I have never seen the movie, because I think, I will like it more than the book. However I will advise you not to put too much heed to my review, after all I am more into romance, Mills and Boon and such. I see many readers have given this book great reviews so if action is your thing, you will love it. Jul 05, Seth rated it liked it. There's little to recommend this book to anyone but a committed fan, but it's by far the best of Gardner's first five Bond novels and one of the few that I actually wanted to keep reading.

John works up an original storyline and, even more surprising, spends some time exploring Bond's character. I got the distinct sense that Gardner doesn't like him and wanted to remind the reader that, in the real world, there would be very little to like about an arrogant murderer.

May 03, Spencer rated it it was ok. A cool premise is ruined by some wonky plot points and an incongruous homophobic comment. Great action, cool twists, but overall a bit implausible in regards to some of Bond's actions I realize that this is the case with many of the films, but you cannot get away with stuff like that in a book. Mar 22, Randall J. The best of Gardner's Bond books. A great set up and conclusion. Gardner's action scenes are still too wordy, but the characterizations and the twists in the plot are strong enough that I was willing to forgive that. May 04, Noah Oanh rated it it was ok Shelves: adult.

Finally, someone ve tried to kill him in a proper way. Apr 03, Cory Dawson rated it it was amazing. If they ever wanted to do a transition in the movies between two different actors, this is where they need to start. Jul 31, Bob Wolniak rated it really liked it. One of the better Gardner Bond books, and maybe the best title. Good plot of assassins out for Bond's head. What happens to James Bond when he is cut to the core? What happens to Bond when he becomes the hunted?

These must have been the questions that spurred Gardner to write this book. Gardner takes on a roller coaster journey of trying to maintain control while desperately trying not to lose everything he holds dear. To the villians, this is a game, but to Bond it becomes payback. This novel is a high octane spy thriller that grabs hold and doesn't let go until the ride is over.

Gardner throws in beautiful women and backstabbing.

Everything that makes a great spy thriller contained in one package. The flaw I did in it was that the conclusion was a bit too cookie cutter for me. It left me saying oh yes of course because he's Bond. I just felt that a more plausible end could've been come to. Nobody Lives Forever is a solid four star read.
